Van Schalkwyk Leads Running Eagles To 22-18 Win
Men's Rugby /
MARIETTA, Ga. – Junior Duncan Van Schalkwyk was the driving force that led the Life University to a 22-18 win over Lindenwood on Saturday.

"The guys showed some intangibles today," Head Coach Colton Cariage said. "The defense was immense, and it put us in the right position. We will have to look at the attack, some decision-making by zone, and grow from it. The guys will want some of those errors back for sure. We were happy with the bench. There were some vets on there, and if anything, they gave us a lift all the way down to the end."

With only one try in the match from Mitchel Wilson, van Schalkwyk gave Life U the edge with five penalty kicks and a conversion.

Lindenwood got things started five minutes into the match as they earned the first penalty kick of the match to go up 3-0. The Running Eagles answered back two minutes later as van Schalkwyk nailed his first penalty of the day. This trend would continue for next several minutes as the Lions would add another penalty kick and van Schalkwyk would answer. However, the streak of kicks would end at 20' as Wilson found pay dirt for the match's only try, with van Schalkwyk making the conversion to go up 13-6. Lindenwood would add another penalty kick, but the Running Eagles would take a 13-9 lead into the intermission.

The parade of penalty kicks would continue in the second half, with the Lions knocking to two through the sticks back-to-back to go up 15-13. However, once again, van Schalkwyk would answer with his own kick to retake the lead 16-15. Lindenwood would get their final points of the match at 68' with their sixth penalty kick of the day. Less than a minute later, van Schalkwyk would give Life U the lead to stay with his fourth penalty kick to go up 19-18. He would add one more kick late in the match to seal the 22-18 victory.

Life U will be back in action on Saturday, Feb. 24 as they welcome Davenport University to Lupo Family Field.
