COLUMBIA, Ky. ---- The No. 3 nationally ranked Life University men's wrestling team took down No. 8 Lindsey Wilson 21-20 on the road Tuesday night in a key Mid-South Conference matchup that propelled the Running Eagles into a two-way tie for first.
The intensity needed no explanation as the top-ten MSC matchup would decide the front runner for the regular season title. Devaughn Sapien started the dual at 125 with a pin 1:56 into the match for an early six points. Lindsey Wilson responded with a 3-1 decision at 133 and a 21-6 technical fall at 141 to lead 8-6.
Mason Calvert picked up the Running Eagles with an 8-2 decision at 149 as
Nosomy Pozo earned a 14-5 major decision at 157 to put Life U ahead 13-8.
Lindsey Wilson responded with a pin at 165 and an 8-4 decision at 174 to retake the lead, 17-13 with three matches remaining. Lucius Van Rensburg earned a 10-4 decision at 184 as Dialo Matsimela put the Running Eagles back in the lead, 20-17, with an 11-2 major decision at 197.
In the final bought of the dual, Lindsey Wilson took a 6-2 decision at 285 to tie the dual at 20. The two teams went through the criteria to determine a winner. With both teams equal on pins and matches won, the deciding factor was total points scored. Life University earned the additional point with a 58-51 advantage in total match points to earn the key victory.
The men's wrestling team will return to action on Saturday, February 2, when they travel to Williamsburg, Ky. to face No. 5 University of the Cumberlands at 7 PM. The Mid-South Conference dual will decide the regular season champion.Â
