NEW YORK ---- The Life University men's club rugby team earned a hard-fought 15-8 road victory over Old Blue over the weekend. The key road win improved the Running Eagles to 2-1 on the year within conference play.
Zander Van Schalkwyk dotted down the first score of the match early in the first half, with
Sam Cowley connecting on the conversion for an early 7-0 lead. With 20 minutes to go in the half, the Running Eagles defensive lines stopped the Old Blue push to prevent the try. Minutes later a penalty was successful from Old Blue to cut the lead to four, 7-3.
The physicality of the match continued as neither team could finish an offensive possession to go into the break with Life U ahead 7-3. Five minutes after the break Cowley connected on a penalty to put the Running Eagles back up a score, 10-3. Duncan Van Schalkwyk found a seam on the outside in the 58th minute to put the Running Eagles ahead 15-3 as points were at a premium.
Both teams battled scrum for scrum, but a line-out for Old Blue in Life U territory resulted in a maul that was able to score the try. The conversion was unsuccessful as Life U held on to earn the key 15-8 victory on the road.
The men's club rugby team will return to action on Saturday, October 5, when they host 404 Rugby on Lupo Family Field at 6 PM.
