ATLANTA, Ga. ---- The Life University women's rugby team fell to Lindenwood University over the weekend at Silverbacks Park 41-24.
The Lions from Lindenwood came to town over the weekend in a match that always has implications on the D1 Elite standings. Life U was able to get started early as
Autumn Locicero scored an early try and the opening of the match to give the Running Eagles a 5-0 advantage. Minutes later, Lindenwood tied the match at five. Thirty minutes later, Lindenwood took a 10-5 lead as neither team could get much offense moving forward.
Just before the half,
Adriana Coco Mendoza Silva scored a try in the corner as
Jess Keating was able to knock through the conversion off the left post to give the Running Eagles a 12-10 lead at the break.
Lindenwood opened the second half with 17 unanswered points to lead 27-12, before Nina Mason scored a try and then made the conversion to cut the lead to eight, 27-19. A pair of tries between the posts gave the Lions 14 additional points to lead 41-19 as
Susan Adegoke added the final Life U try to give the final score of 41-24.
"It's always such a battle against Lindenwood," head coach
Rosalind Chou stated. "They are such physical opponents and take advantage of mistakes. We played a complete 80 minute game and have a lot to build on. We have a long stretch of difficult matches ahead on the road against Penn State, BYU and Lindenwood again, so we know each one of these contests will prepare us for the spring. Huge performances from
Autumn Locicero putting pace on the ball on attack and being relentless on defense, and Coco Mendoza Silva playing in a new position for us at flyhalf this season."
After the conclusion of the varsity match, the JV women played a full match in which the Running Eagles came out on top 17-10.
The women's rugby team will return to action on Sunday, October 24, when they travel to Charlotte, N.C. to face Penn State University.
