DAYTON, Tenn. --- Jordan Hernandez seemed unstoppable most of the night, scoring a season-high 24 points off an impressive 7-for-12 shooting from behind the arc, but despite entering the second half with a lead, the Running Eagles fell apart down the stretch to suffer a 83-71 loss on the road at Bryan (Tenn.) Wednesday night.
The game opened positively for Life U (3-5, 0-4 MSC), the team looking to end its recent losing streak with the road game at Bryan (7-4, 4-3 AAC), but left the contest with its fifth-straight loss. The Lions scored first in the contest, but the Running Eagles answered getting a lead at 10-8 after
Nathan Presnell stole the ball and then scored quickly in transition with 14:12 to go in the half. After trading leads back and forth, one of Hernandez's many deep balls gave the team a 39-38 lead heading into the break.
After the half, a pair of Hernandez threes kept the Running Eagles in the lead, but with 15:26 to play Bryan took a lead that it would not relinquish. The Lions slowly pulled away from Life U pushing the lead to as many as 18 points before
Kyonze Chavis and
Chris Barnes ended the game with a 6-0 run for the Running Eagles, giving the final score of 83-71.
Hernandez played his best game of the season, shooting lights out from behind the arc scoring 24 points off a season best seven threes. Barnes almost matched Hernandez, posting a big 21 point game off the bench in only 22 minutes played.
Both teams shot well on the night, Life U trailing Bryan on shots from the floor 28-for-52 (53.8%) compared to Bryan's 33-for-59 (55.9%). The sharpshooting extended to shots taken from behind the arc, the Lions more efficient at 10-for-18 (55.6%) while the Running Eagles connected on one more at 11-for-23 (47.8%). With the teams shooting so well, neither squad collected too many rebounds, both gaining just 25 boards. The Lions had much more success inside the paint, leading the category 32-14.
The Running Eagles return home for a game against the Columbia International Rams this weekend, tip set for 4 PM Saturday.
