MARIETTA, Ga. ---- The No. 14 nationally Life University men's volleyball team won its second consecutive Mid-South Conference match Monday afternoon with a 3-1 home win over Cumberland University.
NOTES
• Life U improved to 9-3 (6-3) on the year as Cumberland dropped to 8-10 (5-5).
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
•
Alex Cabana led the Running Eagles offensively with 11 kills and a .692 hitting percentage. He added five block assists and eight digs.
•
Felipe Gonzalez also finished in double figures with 10 kills, as
Carlos Negron tallied nine kills with six block assists and one solo block.
• Jonathan
Lemos totaled 40 assists in the match and added three digs and a block assist.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The two teams traded points in the first set as Life U led 10-9 early with a kill from Cabana. The Running Eagles extended the lead with a 5-2 run to lead 15-11. Leading 23-16 late in the set, Life U earned the win off a service error and a kill from Gonzalez 25-19.
• Life U led 14-11 early in set two, however Cumberland came alive offensively with an 8-2 run to lead 19-16. Life U tallied three consecutive points with a service error, attack error and a kill from Henson to tie the set at 20. Life U kept the set close, but Cumberland would take the second set 25-23.
• Cumberland used the momentum from the second set into the third as they led 11-4 early. The Phoenix extended their lead to 16-8 halfway through the set. An 8-2 run from Life U cut the defecit to two, 18-16, after a block from Johnson and kill from Negron. Life U still trailed late in the set 23-21, but the Running Eagles answered with a 4-0 run that included a pair of kills from Negron to win the third set 25-23.
• Life U led for the majority of the fourth set, as a block from
Negron gave the Running Eagles a 12-10 advantage. Reinhardt answered with a 6-2 run to lead 16-14 after a service ace. Life U managed to tie the set at 23 late with a block from Perez and Ollie, however a service error and a service ace gave Reinhardt the 25-23 win to force a fifth set.
• Cumberland led 8-7 early in the fourth set, before Life U answered with a 7-1 run to lead 15-10 with the kill from Johnson. Cumberland stuck around and three consecutive Running Eagle errors brought the set to within one, 20-19. Three quick points for Life U extended the lead back to four, 23-19. Life U earned set point on a pair of service errors from the Phoenix for the 25-22 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Cumberland led Life U in kills 49-46. Life U finished with a hitting percentage of .205 as Cumberland finished with a .121.
• Cumberland also led Life U 47-43 in assists and 57-51 in digs.
• Life U outmatched Cumberland in blocks 13-5, and committed just 20 attack errors to the 32 from the Phoenix.
