MARIETTA, GA — The Men's Basketball Team continued its hot start to begin the 2022-23 season Thursday night, winning their final home game of the opening home-stretch against Voorhees University 76-61.
In the first half, the men would start out slow, initially going down 6-0 before Joshua Ward tallied the opening score, 6-2. Starting point guard Shomik Shahjahan would score a layup moments later, cutting the deficit early to 6-5. Back to back baskets by Tylan Green then gave the Running Eagles their first lead of the night, 9-6, but it would be short-lived as the Tigers reclaimed the lead and held it for the next ten minutes.
The Running Eagles would not overtake the lead again until a Srdjan Popovich three-pointer provided Life U. a slim one-point lead, 23-21. Voorhees University then went on a 7-0 run and never trailed again in the first half, going to the break, Popovich nailed one final three-pointer cutting the Tiger lead to 41-38.
In the final 20 minutes of play, the Running Eagles overtook the lead with 13 minutes left in the contest, 50-49. Voorhees would attempt to come back and close the score gap, but as shots began to rim out, the Running Eagles would fight to maintain control of the game, closing out the second half by outscoring the Tigers 38-20.
After gaining the lead, the men's team kept control of the game, growing the margin up to the game's biggest lead at the two-minute mark. The Running Eagles would close out the game with a good free-throw by Nathan Presnell, 76-61.
Mohamed Elgohary finished the night with a team-high 17 points. Srdjan Popovich finished the night with 12 points shooting 2-3 from behind the arc.
Up next, the Running Eagles will compete in an exhibition contest this Monday at Georgia Southwestern. Tipoff in Americus is set for 7:30 PM.
