MARSHALL, Mo.--- The No. 5 Life University women's wrestling team took a solid contingent to one of the top open tournaments of the season in the Missouri Valley Open, competing over the last two days to see three Running Eagles earn individual placements.
Again, freshman Zaynah McBryde provided the best finish for the Running Eagles, placing fourth in the 130 lbs. bracket. She competed in a loaded bracket, defeating NAIA wrestlers ranked 20th, 7th, 5th, and 3rd. Finding herself in the consolation bracket early, Z. McBryde's push for placement started with a 11-0 tech fall which was followed up by a 7-3 decision over her first ranked opponent-- No. 20 Corinne McClure. Similar results came in her next two matches, earning another tech fall, 10-0, over No. 7 Devin Patton, and a 6-2 decision over No. 5 Sophia Smith. Two more dominant victories over unranked opponents was followed up by a 7-1 decision over the No. 3 130 lbs. wrestler to make it to the third place match. In the third place match, Z. McBryde came up short to claim fourth in her bracket.
At 136 lbs., a strong start by Riley Dalrymple saw her secure a spot in the placement matches. Her first match came against the No. 9 ranked wrestler, pinning her in just 2:49. A pair of tech falls saw the strong start for Dalrymple earn her a spot in the bracket quarterfinals. She lost her quarterfinals match, but bounced back with a 9-4 decision to earn her spot in the seventh round of the consolation bracket. Back-to-back losses to wrestlers ranked 6th and 8th led Dalrymple to finish 8th.
Transfer Jamilah McBryde's day went similarly to her sister's, an early loss to a top opponent--for Jamilah the No. 4 143 lbs. wrestler--pushing her into the consolation bracket. The graduate student earned three-straight victories by tech fall to advance deeply into the consolation bracket. A victory by forfeit against the No. 13 wrestler was followed with a huge showdown against No. 1 Destiny Lyng. J. McBryde controlled the pace of the match, earning the huge upset via 7-3 decision. The following match saw a loss against the No. 2 wrestler, but J. McBryde surged back in the 7th place match, taking a 12-2 tech fall victory to earn 7th place.
