Track and Field Puts Together Another Standout Weekend at Georgia Tech Invite
Men's Track and Field / 04.25.22
ATLANTA, Ga. --- The Life University Track and Field program took contingents from its men's and women's teams to the Georgia Tech Invite this past weekend, showing well in a primarily NCAA DI event as the squads prepare for the Mid-South Conference Tournament next weekend.
The men put together a great performance on the back of a breakout performance by newcomer
Phemelo Matlhabe, the team registering four NAIA A-Standards and five total top 10 finishes. Matlhabe did work in the short track, starting things with a great mark in the 100m dash with a time of 10.46 to finish fourth, and then placing third in the 200m with a blisteringly fast 20.50. His times see him moving into the top 10 in the NAIA in both events, sixth in the 100m and currently the best time in the 200m. The men ran their best relays of the season at the invite, the 4x100m relay squad of Matlhabe,
Ngoni Chadyiwa,
Tyson Hallum, and
Marvin Jean-Francois finishing in 40.86 to place not only third in the event but also sixth nationally. The Running Eagles did even better in the 4x400m relay,
Venord Burrows,
Jacob Ulrich, Chadyiwa, Matlhabe placing second with a time of 3:08.00 which is by far the best time in the NAIA this year. The final top 10 finish at the event was secured by Geovanni Hawes, recording the best javelin throw in the Mid-South Conference this year with a personal best distance of 49.37m.
With a smaller group competing, the women matched the men with four A-Standards and five total top 10 finishes.
Iantha Wright continued her season long excellence, taking fourth place in the 100m dash with a personal best time of 11.60 to rank fourth nationally in the event.
Alisha Wright had herself another day on the hurdles, moving her 100m hurdles time up to third the NAIA rankings with a time of 13.73. The last top result in the track events came in the 4x400m relay, the grouping of
Brianna Florvilus, Dadbjort Magnesdottir,
Breanna Prattt, and
Iantha Wright blowing all other NAIA times this season out of the water with a 3:44.68 to finish third in the event. On the field,
Kaylee Lowe recorded a new personal record in the long jump, hitting a distance of 5.95m to place second in the event and third nationally.
Danielle Albright earned the final top 10 spot for Life U, registering ninth place with a length of 47.03m in the hammer throw.
The next event up for the Running Eagles is the Mid-South Conference Tournament, starting Sunday, May 1st and running through the following day.
