Running Eagles Dominate Patriot Duals

WILLIAMSBURG, KY. --- The No. 1 Life University Women's Wrestling team traveled to the University of the Cumberlands over the weekend to take part in the Patriot Duals, competing in five matches and coming out on top in each of them.
The dual scores went 38-9 over the University of Mount Olive, 33-11 over Lourdes, 30-14 over #10 Indiana Tech, 34-10 over Emmanuel, and 27-17 over No. 9 Cambellsville. With the five victories, Life U's dual victory win streak now spans 13 matches.
The opening dual against Mount Olive saw Life U win eight out of the ten matches. The bouts won by Life U were not close as all eight of the bouts won by Life were bonus points wins. Devyn Gomez got it started with a 14-4 tech fall win before Ariana Martinez, Anna Kresja and Olivia Motley all earned pins. Two more tech falls and two more falls saw the Running Eagles win 38-9.
In the day's second dual, the Running Eagles got off to a quick start, moving ahead to a quick 18-4 lead over Lourdes. All but one of Life U's non-forfeit victories came in the bonus, as Madeline Welch's 3-1 decision over the #17th ranked wrestler was the only win not in the bonus.
Life U's next dual after a bye saw the Running Eagles pick up another impressive win over #10 Indiana Tech. The impressive wins against Indiana Tech included a 10-0 tech fall from Gomez, a tech fall from Ariana Martinez and then a Zaynah McBryde tech fall against the #17 ranked wrestler at 136 lbs. A fall from Latifah McBryde secured an additional cushion before final tech fall came from Margaret Graham at 170 lbs.
On day two, the final two duals matched Life U up against DII Emmanuel University and No. 9 Cambellsville. Both of these duals similarly mirrored Friday's success as the Running Eagles continued to earn bonus point wins. Against Emmanuel, Life U gained a quick 10-0 lead with two early tech falls before the Tigers quickly bounced back with a win at 116. After that, the Running Eagles were able to earn a decision at 143 lbs before L. McBryde, Graham, and Welch closed out the dual with wins.
In the entertaining MSC Campbellsville match, Gomez and Gonzalez got things started with a pair of tech fall wins. Campbellsville then responded with wins at 116 lbs and 123 before a pair of decisions from Mottley and Zaynah McBryde boosted Life U back ahead. With the dual close the Running Eagles again relied on the back half of their lineup to create separation as both L. McBryde and Grahm earned wins via TF. In the final bout of the day Madeline Welch put an exclamation mark on Life U's run earning a win via pin just a 1:12 into the period.
The Running Eagles will next take a contingent to compete in the US Olympic Trials Qualifiers December 15-16th.
