TAMPA, Fla. --- The Life University women's rugby team put together an excellent weekend on the pitch in sevens play, going 5-1 on their way to the U23 Elite Championship at Tropical 7's.
The Running Eagles made rather quick work of the majority of their opponents, only allowing one of the victories to be decided by less than 10 points. Friday started with a victory over the Lindenwood Black squad by a score of 31-10, before another dominant effort, this time over Long Island, saw Life U on top by a score of 48-14. The Running Eagles' only loss of the weekend came in the final match of the first day, suffering a 19-14 loss at the hands of Dartmouth.
With seeding decided by day one results, Life U came out on fire during the second day to run away with the title. Life U started with matches against a pair of familiar squads, beating the Army Black by a score of 22-12 and then Lindenwood Gold to advance to the championship match, 19-7. In the championship bout against Harvard, the Running Eagles pulled off a hard fought victory, 21-17.
Head coach Ryszard Chadwick spoke on the performance from the weekend, "It was a great tournament with some excellent competition. Arguably the four best teams in the country right now were fighting it out before we head to Houston in May for nationals. Day One we didn't perform the way we can party due to travel and systems, meaning on Day Two we had a big game against Army in the quarterfinal. The team played exceptionally on day two. We changed the systems and the players bought into the detail which resulted in good hard earned victories. A full squad effort to bring home the win for Life U! Now, all eyes on Nationals in four weeks time."
The Running Eagles next compete in the CRAAÂ 7's Nationals in Houston, Texas from May 5th-6th.
