MARIETTA, Ga. --- The Life University men's club rugby team capped off an exciting alumni weekend and day full of fun with a win under the lights, followed by fireworks with a win over the Charlotte Rugby Club 27-10.
Facing familiar faces and former Life U standouts, the Running Eagles opened the defensive battle of a first half in the 23rd minute as Seth Smith carried the ball into the try-zone deep in the corner after a sustained attack, 5-0. Serving the majority of the kicking duties, Dario Porta Sanchez converted the extras to extend the lead to 7-0. Matthew Reed struck just minutes later with another try, 12-0. A Charlotte penalty kick then cut into the Life U lead in the 35th minute, 12-3. At the very end of the half it was a deep Tabonga Ngonyamo penalty kick to send the teams to halftime with LU leading 15-3.
In the second half Matthew Carrion tallied the Running Eagles next score of the game with a try in the 45th minute. Smith then carried a short run in for another try in the 59th minute as Life U extended the game out of reach 27-3. Charlotte scored the final try and conversion of the match as time expired to conclude the contest 27-10.
Director of Men's Rugby, Blake Bradford, spoke post-game on the event and support, stating, "We had to show up tonight in front of our alumni, family and friends, and we owed ourselves a better performance after last week. I was very pleased with the intensity the players brought in the first half and we managed to build a lead. There were some lessons in the 2nd half and we left some points out there, but we are happy with the result at home. Big thank you to all the alumni, family and friends that came out to support us."
Up next, the Club Rugby team remains home to host Mystic River at Lupo Family Field next weekend in a 4 pm showdown.
