WILLIAMSBURG, KY. --- Wednesday night, the Life University women's wrestling program took on the University of Cumberlands in an NAIA high class dual where the Running Eagles pulled away with a 29-16 win.
The Mid-South Conference dual featured two top ten NAIA programs as the Running Eagles tabbed their eighth-straight victory dating back to the 2019-2020 season.
Beginning at 101 lbs, an early takedown saw #10 Devyn Gomez caught on the wrong side for a quick first period pin. At 109 lbs, Diana Gonzalez saw a huge second round as the talented freshman nearly secured a tech fall before ultimately settling with a 10-3 decision after a failed final minute takedown attempt. #9 Ariana Martinez then battled through a hard-fought 116 lbs matchup coming back from behind 8-0 to ultimately fall just short in an eventual 10-8 decision against #6 Presley Anderson. At 123 lbs. Anna Krejsa got Life U back in the winning column, completely destroying her opponent in a dominant 14-4 tech fall. All-American Riley Dalrymple kept things going at 130 lbs, making use of five consecutive first round takedowns to cruise to a controlled 10-0 tech fall. At 136 lbs Angie Prado eventually earned a late second-round pin as time ran down in the second after coming out aggressive to secure the victory and extend the team lead to 17-10.
An unfortunate loss came at 143 lbs. as Zaynah McBryde bumped up a weight and raced ahead to earn a hard-fought 8-2 lead that was instantly erased in the second period after a takedown turned into a pin for UC's #6 Micah Fisher.
At 155 lbs., and also moving up a weight class, Jamilah McBryde crushed her opponent, tossing her foe for four points before pinning #19 Ariana Pereira. Following her sister's victory in an anomalous weight class, Latifah McBryde followed suit controlling her opponent from the start, dominating to a 10-0 TF.
To wrap things up for Life U, Madeline Welch secured an upset at 191 lbs using an impressive second period to end things off in a 6-3 decision and give Life U a win with a final score of 29-16.
The Running Eagles return home for their next set of duals next weekend, hosting Indiana Tech, Brewton-Parker and St. Andrews in an exciting day of Mid-South Conference duals in the Life U Upper Gym.
The women's wrestling program will also use Feb. 10th as their Senior Day with plans of honoring the 2024 class of seniors after their morning dual against Indiana Tech.
