MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Life University men's basketball team made history on Saturday, defeating Middle Georgia State, 85-78, in a hard-fought battle at the Multiplex at Cramton Bowl to claim the team's first ever SSAC Tournament Championship. With the win, the Running Eagles earn an automatic bid to this year's NAIA National Tournament.
The Running Eagles started the game slow, as Middle Georgia jumped out to an early lead. Life U then bounced back to cut into the deficit, but Middle Georgia maintained control holding a slight 40-36 advantage at the break. Chaze Harris, Elias Ramirez and Tyreke Johnson kept the Running Eagles within striking distance down the stretch, combining for key baskets in the closing minutes of the first half.
In the second half, a quick score by Harris and a three-pointer from Johnson cut the deficit to one early on. That was the start of a crucial 10-2 run, fueled by Harris' relentless drives and a strong defensive stand by Cortez Johnson, who had two critical blocks. With just under 10 minutes remaining, Life U took control, as a key Chaze Harris block, rebound, and transition dunk began to tilt all the momentum in favor of the tenacious Running Eagles.
Despite the change in momentum, Middle Georgia made a push, closing the gap to 71-68 with five minutes to play. A clutch three-pointer from Srdjan Popovich and another layup from Harris extended Life's lead back to eight moments later. Johnson's free throws, and relentless rebounding and effort from Dara Olonade helped the Running Eagles maintain their advantage in the final moments.
Overall, Chaze Harris was unstoppable, leading all scorers with 30 points while adding nine rebounds and six assists. The SSAC Player of the Year set the tone early with 15 first-half points and carried the momentum into the second, finishing 14-of-22 from the field. First team All-Conference member Cortez Johnson was a force in the paint, securing a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds while contributing two blocks and two steals. Second-teamer Tyreke Johnson scored 13 points, knocking down three three-pointers, while Srdjan Popovich added 11 points and was a maestro running the offense down the stretch with Harris in foul trouble.
The Running Eagles dominated the paint, outscoring Middle Georgia 46-28 inside. Life U also outrebounded the Knights 44-35, leading to a crucial advantage in second-chance points. Stifling defense also contributed to the win as the Running Eagles held Middle Georgia to just 39.7% shooting from the field.
With the win, the Running Eagles turn their attention to the NAIA National Tournament in two weeks.
