Men's Rugby drops hard-fought contest to Navy

04.27.26

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Life University men's rugby team saw its season come to a close on Saturday, falling 35–21 to second-ranked Navy in the CRAA DI-A Semifinals at the Prusmack Rugby Center.

Life came out sharp and controlled the opening half, building a 21–0 lead through three first-half tries. Shaun Matthysen got things started in the 15th minute, finishing a powerful maul to open the scoring. Jonty Lee added the conversion and remained steady throughout the half. James Rose extended the lead just minutes later, finishing off a lineout move to the edge untouched, and Lee knocked over the extras again. Matthysen struck once more late in the half on a pick-and-go near the line, sending the Running Eagles into halftime firmly in control.

Navy responded immediately after the break and quickly shifted momentum, taking advantage of a yellow card to score early in the second half. The Midshipmen crossed three times in quick succession to erase the deficit and level the match at 21–21.

From there, Navy completed the comeback, adding three more unanswered tries while Life continued to defend and fight to regain momentum.

Despite the early dominance, the Running Eagles were held scoreless in the second half as Navy pulled away late to secure the 35–21 result.

Life closes the season with another deep postseason run, once again competing among the nation's top programs in the D1A semifinal stage.
