In what was tabbed as the "pool of death," the Life U versus Clemson match was thought to be the marquee game. Although the final score would indicate a close match, the Running Eagles looked dominant after giving up the game's first try. WIth Clemson owning possession for the first three minutes, the Life U defense was equal to the task. But after a penalty against Life U in the ruck, Clemson took it quickly and dotted down between the sticks to go up 7-0.
The Running Eagles came right back with their first possession, and with good ball movement, sprung Conner Mooneyham down the far touch line to even the match at 7 apiece. Life U then stole a Clemson lineout and Hiko Malu passed to Blane McIlroy who took it at full speed and streaked right through the line for another converted try to take a 14-7 lead into halftime.
Early in the second half, McIlroy was shown a yellow card and Life U had to play the next 2 minutes down a man. But the Running Eagles' defense was up for it and thwarted the Clemson offense. Deep in the Life U end, Mooneyham got the ball on the wing again and went 70 meters untouched to score a shorthanded try to go up 21-7. Back at even strength, the Life U defense held strong and earned a turnover and penalty. Mitchell Wilson made a nice run and offloaded to Mark Gribben in the corner to put Life U up 26-7.
Clemson would tack on a try at the buzzer to make the final score look respectable. Life U wins 26-14. Next up for the men is Indiana at 1:20pm inside the stadium.
