The Life U Men took on University of Arizona in the Cup Quarterfinals on Sunday morning, with the matches moved up to try and stay ahead of the incoming inclement weather. In a battle that went to sudden death overtime, Arizona won by a final of 17-12.
The match began with Arizona controlling possession and testing the Life U defense which was solid and showing no signs of breaking. When Life U finally got the ball, a Life U penalty, its first of 11 in the match, allowed Arizona to finally get past midfield. Harley Davidson made a try-saving tackle near the line, but Arizona swung it wide and scored in the corner for a 5-0 lead. On the next possession, Duncan Van Schalkwyk found space on the edge and offloaded to Conner Mooneyham for Life U's first try. DVS's conversion put Life U up 7-5 at the break.
Life U had first possession in the second, but Arizona intercepted a pass to retake possession but were whistled for a penalty in the ruck. Life U moved the ball deep into Arizona territory but knocked on to give up possession. But a huge hit by Davidson caused a knock by Arizona and off the scrum, DVS hooked up with Sam Cowley who offloaded to Davidson for the try and a 12-5 advantage for LIfe U. With time up, Arizona was patient with their last possession and were able to get a try under the sticks for an easy conversion and a 12-12 tie to end regulation.
In the extra period, Life U got the ball first and methodically made their way inside Arizona's 22, but Arizona poached the ball in the ruck and went the other way. Life U was called for three infractions in a row, and the third sent Mooneyham to the bin. Deep inside Life U territory and up a man, it was only a matter of time before Arizona found the try zone to take the victory 17-12.
It was an epic match, and the Life U men can hold their heads high for another great performance at the Collegiate Rugby Championship!
