MARIETTA, Ga. – Life University (8-8, 3-4 MSC) came up short 2-1 against No. 22 Cumberland (12-2-1, 5-1-1 MSC) in an extremely tight game on Wednesday.
Â
"We were missing a lot of our starters today due to injury, suspension and being sick, but compliments to the boys who replaced them today," Head Coach
Alex Pama said. "We had plenty of chances to win this game against a quality opponent, but we didn't take them. It's always unfortunate when you give up a late goal to lose the game. However, we know we can compete with the very best in our conference and in the nation, so we are looking forward to next week when, hopefully, all of our guys are healthy and available again."
Â
The Running Eagles' lone goal came from freshman
Marek Beno. Junior
Joe Davis suffered the loss in the goal, giving up two goals with six saves.
Â
Life U got things started early as Beno found the back of the net on a pass from junior
Jacob Bivens at 5' to take an early 1-0 lead. The Phoenix would score the equalizer on a penalty kick at 10'. The remainder of the half was a defensive back-and-forth that went into the half all square at 1-1.
Â
The second half began just as the first ended with playing solid defense. With the game looking destined to be headed to overtime, Cumberland score the game winning goal in the waining moments of the game to steal a 2-1 victory.
Â
The Running Eagles will be back in action on Oct. 29 as they face off against Warren Wilson on Senior Day. They will wait for the remaining Mid-South Conference games to be played this week to learn their seed in the conference tournament in Bowling Green, Ky. on Nov. 2.
