Running Eagles Fall To Cumberlands 3-1 In Home Finale

MARIETTA, Ga. – Life University (17-11, 5-7 MSC) fell to Cumberlands (13-15, 5-7 MSC) in the regular season home finale by a 3-1 decision (15-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-19) on Saturday.
 
Junior Gaby Ferrán and Chelsea Hill paced the squad with nine kills apiece. Ferrán's nine kills were a career-high, and she added 19 digs, two aces and a block as well. Hill added nine digs and two blocks. Sophomore Amber Harris contributed 34 assists, nine digs, two aces, a block and a kill.
 
The Running Eagles stumbled a little out of the gate as the Patriots opened on an 8-3 run. They would extend this lead to 16-7 and then 22-11. Life U would attempt a comeback and cut the lead to 22-15, but ultimately fell 25-15.
 
The second set was tight early with both teams trading points. However, UC looked primed to go on another run as went up 10-7. The Running Eagles would have none of it as they crafted a 7-1 run of their own to take a 14-11 lead. From that point on Life U never looked back and eventually took the set 25-21.
 
Whatever momentum Life U had in the second set did not carry over to the third as Cumberlands sprinted out to a 7-2 lead to start the set. The Running Eagles didn't stop fighting though, and kept chipping away at the lead. They were able to trim the score to 17-14 and then 19-17. Unfortunately, they were unable to complete the comeback and fell 25-20.
 
The fourth set began extremely close as neither team was able to gain a sizable lead for a large portion of the set. The Patriots began to break away on a 6-1 run for a 24-18 lead. Two points later the sealed the set and the match with a 25-19 decision.
 
The Running Eagles are back in action on Nov. 3 as they travel to Portsmouth, Ohio to face off against Shawnee State.
