MARIETTA, Ga. – Life University (7-2) managed to outlast Thomas University (3-5) 78-74 on Sunday.
"This was a good win for us," Head Coach
Keith Adkins said. "It was definitely one that we were fortunate to pull out, but a good one. We had some chances to pull away a couple of different times, but give them credit. They got us outside of our comfort zone and we didn't handle it well. However, we will learn and grow from experiences like this."
Four Running Eagles posted double-digit points in the win. Senior
Michael Miller paced the squad with 19 points, as well as four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Senior
Zach Landis posted his second double-double of the week with 13 points and 10 rebounds to go along with six assists and two steals. Both seniors
Undra Mitchem and
Ivan Benkovic logged 11 points apiece. Mitchem added five rebounds, two steals and an assist, while Benkovic added four rebounds, an assist and a steal.
The game boiled down to a tale of two halves. Life U outscored Thomas 34-23 in the first half, while the Night Hawks roared back and outscored the Running Eagles 51-44 in the second half.
Life U opened the first half on a 13-0 run. Thomas was able to cut the lead to five at 15-10 with 9:56 left in the half. However, the Running Eagles would push back out to their largest lead of the period at 34-18, and eventually take a 34-23 lead into the intermission.
It looked as if Life U might run away with the game early in the second half as they went up by 22 at 54-32, just six minutes into the half. However, the Night Hawks refused to go quietly and went to work chipping away at the lead. They managed to trim it to just eight points at 59-51 with just under eight minutes left, but they were not done. They kept grinding and managed to tie the game 71-71 with 51 seconds remaining in the game. Foul trouble and time kept the Night Hawks at bay, as the Running Eagles would survive the second half surge with a 78-74 victory.
Life U will be back in action on Dec. 1 as they hit the road to compete in the Dillard Classic in New Orleans, La. against Talladega and Dillard University.
