Men's Basketball Hits Century Mark in Home Opening Win

MARIETTA, Ga. ---- The Life University men's basketball team defeated Selma University 100-77 Tuesday night in the 2018-19 home opener for the team.  
 
NOTES
• Life U improved to 3-0 on the year, while Selma fell to 1-4.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS 
Deven Dorsett led the way for Life U on a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He added two assists, a block and a steal.
Jay Jay Simpson finished just behind him with 18 points on a pair of assists and steals. 
Connor Gamble shot 5-for-9 from behind the arc and Evan Milligan was a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe as both players finished with 15 points. 
DJ Scott was 6-for-9 from the field and finished with 13 as Taevon Ashmeade added 10 with eight boards, five assists, five steals and a block. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED 
• Selma hit the first shot of the game to lead 3-0, and this would mark the only lead the Bulldogs held all game.
• Life U responded with a 15-0 run that was finished with a three from Ashmeade to lead 15-3 after the first four minutes of play.
• A jumper from Dorsett just under the ten minute mark put the Running Eagles ahead by 15, 31-16.
• With six minutes remaining in the first half, Simpson hit a bucket in the paint to extend the Life U lead to 19, 45-26.
• Selma finished the half on a 16-7 run, however Life U went into the break up by 10, 52-42.
• Life U continued the offensive pressure in the second half, as a three from Gamble three minutes into the second half but the Running Eagles ahead by 21, 68-47.
• With nine minutes remaining in the game, Scott scored in the paint to give Life U the 28-point advantage, 87-59.
• Dorsett connected from beyond the arc at the three-minute mark to put Life U at the century mark and extend the lead to 26, 100-74.
• Selma scored the final bucket with 11 seconds on the clock, as Life U earned the 100-77 victory at home.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Life U finished 36-for-73 from the field, 49.3%, while Selma shot 33-for-65, 50.8%. The Running Eagles finished 13-for-33, 39.4% from beyond the arc, as Selma went 7-for-20, 35%.
• Life U held the advantage in the turnover margin over Selma 20-8, and converted 29 points off of the turnovers.
• Life U shot 15-for-19, 78.9%, from the free-throw line as Selma finished 4-for-10, 40%. 
• Life U held a 31-16 advantage in bench points over Selma.
 
UP NEXT 
• The men's basketball team will return to action on Friday, November 9, as they travel to McKenzie, Tenn. to compete in the SSAC vs. Mid-South Conference Crossover Challenge. The team will match up against Martin Methodist at 2 PM CST.
