MARIETTA, Ga. ---- The Life University men's basketball team upset the No. 19 nationally ranked University of the Cumberlands 74-68 in the Mid-South Conference opener for both teams Saturday night.
NOTES
• Life U improved to 11-6 (1-0) on the year, while Cumberlands fell to 13-3 (0-1).
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
•
Evan Milligan and
Deven Dorsett led all scorers with 17 points in the game. Milligan added a pair of blocks and steals with eight rebounds. Dorsett finished 5-of-8 from the floor and 3-for-4 from behind the arc.
•
Mike White also finished in double figures with 13 points. He also tallied three steals with a pair of rebounds and was 5-of-6 from the free-throw line.
•
Jay Jay Simpson was the final Running Eagle to finish in double figures with 12 points and five boards.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Life U jumped out to an early 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game as Cumberlands was forced to call an early timeout.
• A 10-2 run from Cumberlands gave the Patriots a one-point lead, 10-9. Life U responded with a 10-0 run to increase its lead to double digits, 20-10, for the first time in the game after a made free-throw from Ashmeade at the halfway point in the first half.
• Life U led by at least five for the remainder of the half, as Milligan connected in the paint just before the buzzer to put the Running Eagles ahead 37-30 at the break.
• Five minutes into the second half, Dorsett connected from deep to put the Running Eagles ahead by 10, 49-39.
• Cumberlands cut the lead to three, 63-60, after a fastbreak layup from Colvin-Seldon just under the five-minute mark.
• A deep three from Cumberlands cut the Running Eagle lead to four, 69-65, with just over a minute remaining in the game.
• Life U ended the game on a 6-3 run to earn the 74-68 upset victory over Cumberlands at home.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Life U finished 25-for-55 from the field, 45.5%, while Cumberlands shot 25-for-58, 43.1%. The Running Eagles finished 5-for-16, 31.3% from beyond the arc, as the Patriots went 9-for-21, 42.9%.
• Life U held the advantage in turnover margin over Cumberlands 19-15 as the Running Eagle3s outscored the Patriors 36-28 in points in the paint.
• Life U shot 19-for-28, 67.9%, from the free-throw line as Cumberlands finished 9-for-14, 64.3%.
