MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- The Life University women's basketball team started the 2019-20 season with a 78-53 victory over Florida Memorial in the Jimmy Faulkner Classic being hosted by Faulkner University Friday afternoon.
NOTES
• Life U improved to 1-0 as Florida Memorial dropped to 0-1.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• Newcomer
Sydni Tears led the way for the Running Eagles on a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. She added to assists and a steal.
•
Jamee Ward also finished in double figures with 15 points and was 3-for-4 from behind the arc with a steal.
•
Shikiya Brown added eight points with two blocks, an assist and a steal.
Maeisha Teasley totaled a team-high four steals as the Running Eagles finished with 14 as a team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Life U jumped out to an early 11-3 lead in the first two and half minutes of the first quarter.
• The scoring slowed as Life U picked up its next basket with a jumper from Daphney with under five minutes on the clock. Brown tallied the final points of the quarter as Life U led 19-10 heading into the second quarter.
• Five minutes into the second half, Life U continued the offensive pressure as a steal from Teasley resulted in two for Tears to put the Running Eagles ahead 28-10.
• An offensive rebound from
Tianna Tullis resulted in the put-back to put Life U ahead by 20, 33-13, with four minutes remaining in the half. Life U led 38-22 at the break.
• Life U extended its lead to 19, 50-31, five minutes into the third quarter with a free-throw from Brown. Life U held the advantage as a pair of free-throws from Tullis just before the end of the quarter gave the Running Eagles a 61-40 lead heading to the fourth.
• Life U held a double figure lead the entire fourth quarter as Ward scored the final Running Eagle basket with just under two minutes on the clock to give Life U the 78-53 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Life U finished 30-for-70 from the field, 42.9%, while Florida Memorial shot 19-for-51, 31.1%.
• Life U shot 13-for-24, 54.2%, from the free-throw line as Florida Memorial finished 11-for-19, 57.9%.
• Life U forced 31 turnovers and scored 32 points off of them. Life U also scored 45 points off the bench and 36 in the paint.
