LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. ---- The (RV) Life University men's soccer team advanced in penalty kicks 4-3 over Union College in the NAIA Opening Round Friday afternoon.
NOTES
• The final score of the match was 2-2 with Life U advancing on penalties.
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
•
Mattheus Brandao scored the opening goal for the Running Eagles on his only shot of the match.
•
Thierry Jules led the team with five total shots and three on frame as he provided the second Life U goal.
•
Fabian Pekruhl totaled three saves in goal, including a save in penalties to secure the Life U victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Both teams had early chances at goal in the first half, however neither team were able to find the back of the net in the first 30 mintues of play.
• Soronellas connected with Brandao in the 31
st minute to put Life U ahead 1-0.
• 20 seconds later, a takeaway in the midfield allowed Jules to beat the keeper 1-on-1 to put Life U ahead 2-0. The Running Eagles took the lead into the half.
• 15 minutes into the second half, Life U still claimed a 2-0 lead. However, Union scored its first of the match in the 62
nd minute to cut the lead to one.
• A foul in the box gave Union a penalty kick opportunity in the 82
nd minute as the Bulldogs tied the match at two.
• At the end of regulation, the match remained 2-2 to advance into two sudden death overtime periods.
• Life U outshot Union 3-2 in the two overtime periods, however neither team scored to send the match to penalties with the winner advancing in the tournament.
• Life U went first in penalties, and after three successful penalties, Pekruhl came up with the save to give Life U the 3-2 advantage. Brandao buried his strike into the left corner to seal the Running Eagles' victory 4-3 in penalties.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Union narrowly outshot Life U 14-12 during the match, however Life U held a 7-5 advantage in shots on frame.
• Union held a 9-2 lead in corner kicks throughout the match.
• Life U totaled three saves in goal as Union finished with five.
