Women's Volleyball Sweeps Opening Weekend

GREENVILLE, S.C. ---- The Life University women's volleyball team swept a pair of matches on the road Friday night to kick off the 2020 season 2-0. 
 
NOTES
• Life U defeated Carolina University in the opener 3-1 before coming from behind to win three straight sets in a 3-1 win over hosts Bob Jones University.
• Life U set a program-record with 15 aces in the first match against Carolina.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMERS 
Mary Zimmerman tallied a team-high 13 kills in game two with six block assists. She finished the day with 20 kills and eight block assists.
Lena Pucnik and Caitlyn Neal each picked up 10 kills in the first match of the day as Pucnik added six service aces in both matches. Morgan Furness also finished in double figures with 10 kills and six block assists in the second match.
• Defensively, Marin Black totaled 37 digs as Michele O'Haver tallied 17. Pucnik finished on a double-double with 20 digs. 
• Taylor Parrish totaled 79 assists in both matches. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 1
• Life U led from the start and held a double-digit lead a majority of the first set. Trailing 22-11 late in the set, Carolina University responded with an 8-1 run to bring the score to 23-19. Louis picked up a kill and O'Haver tallied the ace to end the set 25-19.
• Life U held an early 7-6 lead in set two before an 8-1 run gave the Running Eagles a 15-7 advantage. Life U held on to win the second set by double digits, 25-14, with a block from Mollick and Louis ending the set.
• Life U led 23-22 late in set three, however Carolina University took its first set with a late 3-1 score by unforced errors to give the Bruins the 29-27 win.
• Life U never trailed in the fourth set as the Running Eagles earned the 25-22 set win to clinch the match.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE GAME 1
• Life U dominated Carolina in kills 53-39. Life U finished with a hitting percentage of .193 as Carolina finished with a .108.
• Carolina led Life U in digs 67-66.
• Life U led Carolina in aces 15-6 and blocks 6-5.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME 2
• Bob Jones led the entire first set as the Bruins earned a 25-17 win in set one.
• Life U held a narrow 12-10 lead in set two before a 9-3 run put the Running Eagles ahead 21-13. Furness and Pucnik finished the set with back-to-back kills to give Life U the 25-19 win to tie the match.
• Life U jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the third set with a kill from Furness to end the run. The Bruins battled back with a 5-1 run in the middle of the set to bring the score to 16-14 in favor of Life U. A quick 4-0 burst saw Life U extend the lead to 20-14 before Bob Jones answered with a 7-0 run to take a 21-20 late lead. The Running Eagles ended the set on a 5-2 run with Pucnik sealing the match 25-23.
• Life U jumped out to an early 7-3 lead with Neal tallying the kill. However a late 10-1 run from Bob Jones put the Bruins ahead 21-17. Life U responded with a 6-1 run that was finished with a kill from Furness to take a 23-22 lead. Bob Jones sat on set point 24-23 to force a fifth set, but a service error and attack error gave Life U a 25-24 advantage. The two teams battled back and forth but a ball handling error and kill from Pucnik gave Life U the come from behind win 29-27.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE GAME 2
• Life U led Bob Jones in kills 48-41. Life U finished with a hitting percentage of .137 as Bob Jones finished with a .061.
• Life U led Bob Jones in digs 67-61.
• Life U also led Bob Jones in blocks 15-6 and assists 45-36.
 
UP NEXT
• The women's volleyball team will return to action on Friday, October 16, as they travel to Mount Vernon, Ga. to face Brewton-Parker College at 7 PM.
