PORTSMOUTH, Ohio. ---- The Life University men's basketball team was unable to overcome a slow first half as they fell to (RV) Shawnee State 63-53 in the Mid-South Conference opener Thursday night.
NOTES
• Life U fell to 4-1 (0-1) on the year, while Shawnee State improved to 3-0 (1-0).
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
• James Moore led the Running Eagles offensively with 18 points and nine rebounds.
• Daylon Tanksley also finished in double figures on a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Running Eagles quickly found themselves in a hole as the Bears jumped out to an early 9-0 lead.
• Both teams struggled at finding the bottom of the net in the first half of play, but Shawnee State managed to maintain control the tempo for the majority of the half. Yesid Mosquera-Perea gathered an offensive board in the 30 seconds leading to the break that he put back up and in to cut the lead to 29-19 after the first.
• The second half started with more of the same, the Bears garnering their largest lead of the game at 40-26 after a three-point play with 11:32 remaining in play.
• Moore sparked a comeback for the Running Eagles with five points scored in a 50 second span. Life U pulled within three points twice in the final minutes of the game, Jordan Hernandez hitting a shot to set the score at 54-51, and then shortly after, Tanksley made a bucket on a fast break after recording a steal to keep things tight at 56-53.
• The Bears closed out the game by scoring the final seven points,setting the final score at 63-53.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Life U finished 20-for-68 from the field, 29.4%, while Shawnee State shot 20-for-52, 38.5%. The Running Eagles finished 2-for-18 (11%) from beyond the arc, as the Bears went 4-for-22, 18.2%.
• Life U forced led Shawnee State 8-7 in steals during the game.
• Life U shot 11-for-15, 73.3%, from the free-throw line as Shawnee State finished 19-for-29, 65.5%.
