BABSON PARK, Fla. ---- The Life University men's volleyball team finished the weekend 3-0 at the Webber International University Pod Tournament. The Running Eagles improved to 6-4 on the year with a pair of 3-0 victories over Midway and Webber and a 3-1 win over Bluefield to close the weekend.
Outside hitter
Sebastian Obrador finished the weekend with 32 kills as he was named Mid-South Conference Attacker of the week.
Allain Larroche averaged 10.2 assists per set and finished with 102 and nine service aces as he was named the Mid-South Conference Setter of the week.
In the opener against Midway, the Running Eagles used a late 7-2 run to take the first set 25-22. Life U battled Midway in the second set, but a kill from
Alex Gonzalez and block from Larroche and
Alex Cabana put the team ahead two sets to none, 25-23. The Running Eagles trailed late in set three, but finished the match on a 9-2 run as Gonzalez picked up the final kill to earn the sweep, 25-19. Life U led Midway in kills 42-28 and attacking percentage .329-.227. Life U also led in aces 11-2 and blocks 7-2.Â
The men then matched up with hosts Webber in the second game of the day, where the Running Eagles again picked up the sweep 3-0. Webber threatened late in the set ahead 24-21, but Life U responded with a 5-0 run that featured a pair of kills from
Felipe Gonzalez to take the first set 26-24. The Running Eagles finished the second set on a 7-1 run with a pair of aces from Gonzalez to win 25-18. In the third and final set, Webber led early, but Life U closed the door with a 5-1 run to take the match, 25-18. Inside the box score, Life U led Webber in kills 40-27 and in attacking percentage .329-.184. Life U also held an 8-1 advantage in service aces over Webber and a 26-16 margin in digs.
Life U closed out the weekend with a 3-1 win over Bluefield. Bluefield led 24-20 late in set one, and a Life U comeback came up short as the Rams took set one 25-23. Life U never trailed in the second set as they responded with a 25-12 win to tie the match at one. The momentum kept rolling in favor of the Running Eagles as the men earned another dominant set win in the third frame 25-17. Bluefield was poised to send the match to a fifth set ahead 24-22, but a 5-1 run from Life U earned the victory 27-25. Life U held a narrow 48-44 advantage over Bluefield in kills as the Running Eagles continued to be dominant from the service line with 10 aces.Â
The men's volleyball team will return to action on Friday, February 21, when they host St. Andrews University in the Eagles' Nest for a home Mid-South Conference matchup at 7 PM.Â
