MARIETTA, Ga. --- Freshman
Danny DeLorijn recorded his third multi-goal game of the season in the Life University men's soccer team's dominant, 5-0, victory over the visiting Pikeville Bears in Mid-South Conference play Friday afternoon on the KSU-Marietta Intramural Field.
Life U (5-5-1, 3-3-1 MSC) ran off its second-straight victory, while Pikeville (1-10-0, 1-7-0 MSC) stays near the bottom of the conference rankings. The game started slowly offensively for the Running Eagles, the Bears doing a good job on defense of gumming up the Life U attack. The Running Eagles outshot Pikeville 17-4 in the period, but did not break through to score a goal until
Tommy Stevens got one by the goalkeeper in the 41st minute off a ball from
Callum Jenkins. Holding a 1-0 lead after the break, the Running Eagles raced off of the gate in the second half DeLorijn scoring twice in quick succession in the 55th and 57th minutes. Just over 10 minutes later,
Steinar Magnusson headed in a ball off a
Ramy Katit corner kick to put the team in a. commanding 4-0 lead. The final score of the game came in the 74th minute, Mattheus Brandao collecting a
Wilfried Tchoupa Kamden cross in front of the goal and kicking the ball past the Bears' goalkeeper.
Besides DeLorijn's strong performance starting at forward with two goals on a game-high six total shots, the other three scores came from the bench via Magnusson, Stevens, and Brandao. Tchoupa Kamden and Katit both recorded a pair of assists on the day, while helping to keep the offensive pressure turned up.
Life U held a commanding advantage in the offensive statistics during the game, taking 30 shots (16 on goal) to only eight from the Bears to go along with 10 corners kicks taken to one for Pikeville. With how many shots were taken, Pikeville had a strong edge in saves at 11-2, while fouls and cards went against Life U for the most part at 12-6 and 1-0, respectively.
The men stay home for their next contest, facing Shawnee State on the campus of Marietta High School Sunday at 2 PM.
