Men's Soccer Drops Regular Season Finale to (RV) Cumberlands, 3-2

ATLANTA, Ga. --- The Life University men's soccer team fell apart down the stretch on a cold and rainy day at Silverback's Park today, giving up three goals in the final nine minutes to lose to (RV) University of the Cumberlands 3-2 in what was a thrilling Mid-South Conference game.

Life University (7-7-1, 5-5-1 MSC) held the advantage through the first 80+ minutes of today's game, but a last minute blitz of goals by (RV) Cumberlands (Ky.) (9-4-3, 8-2-1 MSC) saw the team come away from the day with a regular season ending loss. Both teams were able to create opportunities to take shots during the first half, Life U leading with 10 shots as compared to seven from the Patriots in the opening frame, but the Running Eagles had trouble getting shots on frame with only one while Cumberlands had three in what was a 0-0 tie after 45 minutes of play. Just over 13 minutes into the second half, a well placed Callum Jenkins corner kick was headed in by Jose Fernando Miguel to put the Running Eagles up 1-0. Much like how the rain was steady, Cumberlands (Ky.) consistently created opportunities for shots on goal, but second half goalkeeper Luka Zakarija collected five straight saves from the 62nd to 75th minute. With less than nine minutes to go in the match, the Patriots finally got a goal past Zakarija following a free kick. A minute later, Cumberlands (Ky.) took a 2-1 lead after a goal on a corner kick. In the 86th minute Life U evened the score with a Matheus Brandao score assisted by Wilfried Tchoupa Kamden. Another minute later, the Patriots recorded the final score of the game, giving the Running Eagles the 3-2 loss.

Despite Life U outshooting the Patriots on the day, the Running Eagles struggled to put shots on frame, trailing the category 11-4, while also trailing in corner kicks 7-4. Defensively Life U earned many more saves than the Patriots at 8-2. The refs were decently active on the day, calling Life U on more fouls at 14-8, while also dishing out more yellow cards in the Running Eagles direction, 3-2.

The men's soccer team turns to post season play now, readying to play host in the Mid-South Conference tournament to Thomas More in the 7-10 match either Monday or Tuesday at Franklin Gateway Sports Complex.
