MOUNT VERNON, Ga. ---- The Life University women's basketball team fell 70-68 to Brewton-Parker on the road Saturday night as the Barons hit a buzzer-beater layup for the win.
Life U controlled the Barons defensively in the first half as they limited Brewton-Parker to just eight field goals in the first two quarters. The Running Eagles held a 29-24 lead as neither offense could get much going early on.
Both teams battled in the third quarter as the lead changed a total of ten times in the game. Life U clung to its lead in the third, but a three and layup from Brewton-Parker saw a two-point lead dissapear to give the Barons a three-point advantage, 40-37 with 4:34 on the clock. A three from Santiago and jumper from Edeh gave the Running Eagles the 42-41 advantage with 3:11 remaining in the quarter. Delk hit a jumper with four seconds on the clock to give Life U the 49-48 advantage heading to the final quarter.
The two offenses came to life in the second half, as neither team could extend a lead past three in the fourth quarter. Delk hit a three in transition for the Running Eagles to give them a 66-64 lead with 1:13 on the clock. Brewton-Parker tied the game twenty seconds later, and took a 68-66 lead with 13 seconds on the clock. A timeout and advance of the ball allowed Collins to tie the game with just four seconds left. Brewton-Parker called a timeout immediately following and advanced the ball as well. A missed three allowed for the offensive rebound and tip-in just before the buzzer to give the Barons the 70-68 victory.
As a team, Life U finished 27-for-65 (41.5%) from the field, 7-for-19 (36.8%) from behind the arc and 7-for-16 (43.8%) from the free-throw line. They totaled 20 points in the paint and 19 points off the bench. The Running Eagles tallied just four second chance points with 18 turnovers. They picked up 34 rebounds and five steals as well.
Brewton-Parker finished 26-for-66 (39.4%) from the floor, 4-for-15 (26.7%) from three and 14-for-31 (45.2%) from the free-throw line. They scored 26 points in the paint and 17 points off turnovers. The Barons tallied 36 rebounds with 11 steals and just 11 turnovers.
Individually for the Running Eagles,
Lenise Santiago and
Eva Caroline Singleton each added 14 points.
Amara Edeh finished one rebound from a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Morgan Collins added 12 points with eight assists and three steals.
The women's basketball team will return to action on Friday, November 5, when they begin play in the Faulkner Classic in Montgomery, Ala. against Thomas University at 2 PM.
