Kenny Pittman, Jr. chipped in 12 as the Life University men's basketball team came alive in the second half to pull away for a 70-58 victory over Brewton-Parker Friday night in The Eagles' Nest.
Life U (3-0) relied on a deep rotation to keep their legs fresh against Brewton-Parker (1-7) as 11 players got meaningful minutes for the Running Eagles. The first half was a back-and-forth affair, the lead being exchanged 12 times and the score being tied six. Life U's largest lead in the first half was four points, Pittman, Jr. splashing in a deep ball with 4:54 remaining in th period, while a
Kyonze Chavis jumper kept the lead at the same spot at 2:12. After the game was tied again at 31-31 with just over a minute to go in the half, the Running Eagles went into the break with a one point lead from a
Tylan Green made free throw.
Coming out of the break, the Running Eagles maintained and built upon their lead through the remainder of the contest. Pittman Jr. provided the first score of the second half, connecting on another shot from deep with 18:22 to go. The Barons cut the lead to one four minutes into the second, but an 8-0 run by Life U over the following four minutes had the game's momentum firmly on their side. A Hernandez three ball with 5:34 left gave the Running Eagles their first double-digit lead at 56-45. Following a missed three point shot by Chavis, Hernandez collected the ball for a high flying tip-in, giving the team their largest lead of the game at 62-47 with just three and a half minutes to play as the team kept up the pressure from that point to take the 70-58 victory.
The Running Eagles' best offensive performances came from a duo that combined for 7-for-19 shooting from deep, Hernandez and Pittman, Jr. feeling it tonight form behind the arc. Hernandez scored 14 with four rebounds, while Pittman, Jr. scored 12 with three boards. Freshman
Dara Olonade came close to a double-double, pulling down a team-high seven rebounds and eight points.
Life U was more efficient from the floor on the night going 27-for-68 (39.7%) as opposed to the Barons who went 26-for-72 (36.1%). Brewton-Parker only scored a single deep ball on the night (1-for-12), while the Running Eagles connected on seven shots from behind the arc. Neither team had a good day from the charity stripe, Life U shooting 9-for-23 (39.1%) while Brewton-Parker went 5-for-11 (45.5%). Life U also had a slight edge in rebounds at 50-49. The men did a good job of defending the glass, swatting away six shots.
The men will be on the road for the next couple weeks, playing an exhibition match at Mercer November 16, before kicking off the conference season at Thomas More Thursday, November 18th at 8 PM.
