LEBANON, Tenn. --- After what was a tightly contested, scoreless first half, the upset bid and chance to extend the season ended, Life University men's soccer allowing four second half goals to lose 4-1 in the Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals at No. 21 Cumberland University.
Life University (8-8-1, 5-5-1 MSC) stayed stride-for-stride with No. 21 Cumberland University (13-3-1, 8-2-1 MSC) in regards to shots taken, but a stellar afternoon by the Phoenix defensive effort saw the Running Eagles end the day on the wrong side of the scoreboard. The team's traded shots in bunches over the course of the first half, but both team's defenses held strong, Life U sending the game into the break tied 0-0. After the half, a quick Cumberland goal put the Running Eagles on their back foot, but the men responded quickly,
Matteo Olivotto finishing an opportunity passed to him by
Danny DeLorijn in the 55th minute. Life U did not score another goal past that point despite putting six more shots on frame while Cumberland pulled away, the Running Eagles losing 4-1.
Both teams attempted over their season average in shots, the teams tying at 20 shots each, while Life U led shots on goal 12-10. Corner kicks went strongly in favor of the Phoenix, leading the category 9-2. Cumberland also led in saves with 11 to Life U's six. The teams stayed close to each other when it came to the referees, Life U earning a couple more fouls at 15-12, and both teams earning a single yellow card.
Friday afternoon's loss spells the end of the 2021 campaign for the men's soccer team.
