LEBANON, Tenn. --- The Life University women's soccer team found themselves in contention, down a single goal with less than 20 minutes to go in the competition, but could not finish the comeback, losing in the Mid-South Conference Quarterfinals to 16th-ranked host Cumberland University, 4-2.
Today's loss sees a program-best win streak that started in the middle of the season and extended into the postseason for Life U (11-7-0, 7-4-0 MSC), come to an end on the road against No. 16 Cumberland University (13-3-1, 8-2-1 MSC). Having played on the road at Cumberland earlier in the season, the Running Eagles played a much improved game, giving the surging Phoenix everything they could handle. Life U allowed an early goal, but tied things up in the 26th minute,
Mathilde Sletner bombing a free kick into the net from distance, evening the game 1-1. A Cumberland goal in the final minutes of the first half and early following the break saw the Running Eagles in a 3-1 hole with 35 minutes to play. Continuing to keep up the pressure, outshooting the Phoenix 9-3 in the second half,
Amiyah Robinson finally broke through for a goal with 17:49 left on the clock on passes from
Thora Hreggvidsdottir and
Alexandra Collighan. The Running Eagles steady attack gave them a couple more looks at the tying goal, but a costly own goal with five minutes to go ended any hopes of a comeback, losing 4-2.
Despite the two goal loss, Life U held a strong advantage in shots, taking 18 (six on goal) to only seven (four on goal) from Cumberland, and also led in corner kicks at 3-1. Life U did not collect any saves over the course of the game, while the Phoenix had four. The game played out rather chippy, the referees staying busy calling 20 fouls on Cumberland and 13 on Life U, while a total of seven yellow cards were awarded between the two squads.
With the Conference Quarterfinals loss, the continuation of the women's season is dependent on whether they are called on NAIA National Tournament Selection Day.
