LEBANON, Tenn. ---- A tough second quarter saw the Life University women's basketball team unable to catch up, falling in the team's regular season finale to Mid-South Conference rival Cumberland University, 78-60, on the road this afternoon.
NOTES
• Life U finishes the regular season 2-13 (0-12) following the loss, while Cumberland (Tenn.) improves to 3-11 (2-11).
STANDOUT PERFORMERS
•
Sydni Tears recorded a double-double with points and rebounds, leading all players with 26 points scored on the night to go with her 11 boards. Tears put up the majority of her stats in the second half, scoring 20 of her 26 on 6-for-12 shooting from the field and 2-for-4 from three.
•
Cheyenne Daphney posted a double-double of her own, collecting 14 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The teams stayed even through the first quarter of play,
Tahira McBride getting the team started with a deep ball at the 7:55 mark. Another deep ball, this time from
Na'Caia Jackson put the Running Eagles up 12-11 with just over a minute to go in the opening quarter.
Amara Edeh ended the quarter with a layup, the teams leaving the first tied up at 14.
• Daphney single-handedly started the second quarter with a 5-0 run for the Running Eagles over the first minute, but the team went scoreless over the next six minutes as Cumberland (Tenn.) took a commanding 34-19 lead. Tears and Daphney connected on shots in the final minute to pull the score somewhat closer as the teams headed into the break, the Phoenix leading 38-27.
• Tear's splashed in a three and then drew a foul on a jumper for another three point play in the minute of the second half to push the lead below 10 at 38-33. The Phoenix pulled back away though as Life U found themselves entering the final frame of play with a 60-46 deficit.
• Life U never closed the gap back to within 10 or less again in the game, slowly falling further behind over the course of the fourth quarter as the game drew to its final score of 78-60.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
• Life U hit on a lower shooting percentage 20-for-70 (28.6%), while Cumberland went 22-for-57 (38.6%)
• Life U shot 4-for-21, 19%, from beyond the arc and 16-for-25, 64%, from the free-throw line. The Phoenix finished 9-for-22, 40.9%, from distance and 25-for-33, 75.8%, from the free-throw line.
• The Running Eagles trailed on the boards as well, collecting 41 to Cumberland's 52.

• The women's basketball team turns to the Mid-South Conference Tournament next, and should be hitting the road to travel to fifth-seeded, No.18 Shawnee State for the opening round on Monday, February 22.
