KENNESAW, Ga. --- The Life University women's soccer team nearly went the distance with 15th-ranked Lindsey Wilson in a home Mid-South Conference game this evening played on the campus of Kennesaw Mountain High School, but with just two minutes remaining in the second overtime a Blue Raider goal ended the game 2-1 in their favor.
Life University (3-5, 0-3 MSC) gave Lindsey Wilson (4-2, 3-0 MSC)Â all they could want, neither team being able to separate themselves from the other through the entirety of the game. Lindsey Wilson scored first midway through the first half, but Life U quickly followed that up with a rocket shot from
Thora Hreggvidsdottir to see the game exit the first half tied 1-1. The pace of play continued at a similar level in the second half, the Blue Raiders getting off another eight shots, while Life U posted six, but neither team could break through for a goal, forcing the game into extra time. Life U nearly ended the game right off the bat in the first overtime,Â
Madison Knutsen heading the ball off the crossbar. The second overtime started with another shot on frame, this time from
Mathilde Sletner, but that would prove to be the Running Eagles last shot of the game. Following a red card, Lindsey Wilson took advantage of the personal advantage,
Emily Hounsell stopping their first shot on goal, but not being able to reach the second for the 2-1 2OT loss.
The game also, unsurprisingly, played out very closely statistically, Life U nearly matching the Blue Raiders in every statistical categories except for fouls and cards received. Shots were 19-15 in Lindsey Wilson's favor, while the slight edge on shots was reflected in the Running Eagles holding a 9-6 advantage in saves. Both squads earned a fair number of corner kicks, taking six each. Fouls and cards received stood out as a category with more disparity, Life U leading 14-9 in fouls and 4-1 in cards.Â
Hreggvidsdottir scored the lone goal of the game for Life U, while also leading the team with five total shots, four of which were on goal. The defense did a good job of limiting the Blue Raiders attacking opportunities, Hounsell playing well in the loss with nine total saves.
Following tonight's tight loss, the Running Eagles will stay home, facing (RV) Campbellsville University on the KSU-Marietta Campus Intramural Field Saturday, October 2 at 3 PM.
