Men's Basketball / 10.29.22
MARIETTA, Ga. — The Life University men's basketball team won its second game of the season Saturday afternoon, downing the Chargers from Southeastern Baptist to conclude the annual Kenwood Memorial Classic.
Life U. (2-0) used a dominant first half to build a sizable lead by halftime before ultimately downing the Chargers 91-64.
To open the game, neither team could build a lead as timely baskets and untimely turnovers prevented either team from breaking ahead. With nearly four minutes played in the opening half, the Chargers gained a 7-4 lead off a Jared Naylor layup before a pairs of Life U. Layups and a dunk from Nathan Presnell pushed the Running Eagles ahead, 10-7.
A Srdjan Popovich 3-ptr. extended the Life U. lead to 13-7 and the Running Eagles never looked back as it was all Life University from here as the lead grew to over 20 by halftime.
Going to the break, a 5-0 run fueled by Freshman Shomik Shahjahan's old-fashioned three point play and back to back layups by Tylan Green and Will Freeman put the Running Eagles up 52-28.
Second half play produced another emphatic Nathan Prenell dunk to open Life U's scoring, but it was again Life University's ability to score off the bench that contributed to the team's second, consecutive win of the season.
After the nonstarters scored 45 in the Life University's season opener against Thomas University, the bench turned it up a notch to score 55 Saturday afternoon as Will Freeman, Srdjan Popovich, and Ben Underwood scored 27 points from behind the arc alone.
Second chance points also fell heavily in favor of the Running Eagles, 17 compared to four from Southeastern Baptist. Junior Nathan Presnell led all scorers with 16 as SBC guard Baylor Wells scored 15 in the loss.
Up next, the Running Eagles will have a week to regroup before hosting the Seahawks from Keiser University.
Tipoff in the Eagles' Nest is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
