Marietta, Ga. — The Life University women's basketball team stormed past the Mariners from Coastal Georgia 89-59 Saturday afternoon, completing the season sweep over the Mariners.
Three of Life University's starting five reached double digits with Fapou Semebene leading the charge with a team-high 17 points, including an impressive six steal performace. Maikya Simmons and Sienna Bailey tallied twelve and ten respectively, while the Running Eagles' other two starters (Kierra York and Nekiyah Booker) both scored nine. With the team effort, the Running Eagles completed the 2-0 series sweep after besting Coastal Georgia earlier this season 80-56.
The Running Eagles (8-3, 2-2 SSAC) were fueled by dominant second and fourth quarters, scoring a staggering 28 points in each. The team shot 22% to begin the game, as Coastal Georgia (1-11, 0-4 SUN) claimed an early 16-12 lead after the first quarter. In the second, an 11-2 run to begin the quarter saw the Running Eagles reclaim the lead and go ahead by five with 5:47 left in the half.
In the second quarter, Life U. shot a blistering 61% from the field including an impressive 75% from long-range to take and extend a lead into halftime, 40-29.
After taking the lead into the break, Coastal Georgia tried to stabilize in the third, but the Running Eagles outscored the Mariners 49-30 in the second half as a huge fourth quarter performance mirrored the second quarter, as the Running Eagles again outscored the Mariners 28-13.
In the win, Life University made the most of Coastal Georgia's lapses, converting 41 points off CCG turnovers and scoring 13 points after offensive boards. The Running Eagle starters were dominant, tallying 57 points and grabbing nine steals. The Running Eagles shot 50% from behind the arc but struggled from the line only hitting 13-24.
Despite the loss, CCG starting point guard Joyce Jordan stood out, scoring 27 points.
