MARIETTA, Ga. --- Chris Barnes and
Jordan Hernandez led the way for the Running Eagles with 26 points each as Life University put together a massive second half come back, defeating No. 13 Georgetown College in Mid-South Conference play, 81-77, Saturday afternoon in the Eagles Nest.
Life U (7-18, 4-16 MSC) found a come from behind victory in their home conference finale, besting Georgetown (22-5, 15-5 MSC) in a game that saw the teams trading threes in bunches like they did the lead, the teams combining for 12 made deep balls over the first 12 minutes of play and exchanging the lead 11 times. Georgetown went on an 11-0 run after a Barnes layup had given the Running Eagles a 30-27 lead, the Tigers holding a 38-30 lead with 5:50 to go in the period. Hernandez hit another big shot from behind the arc to cut the deficit to only four with 3:48 left till halftime, but another Georgetown run saw the teams head into the break, Life U trailing 46-36.
Coming out of the break, Georgetown maintained their lead through the first portion of the second, but the swarming Life U defense forced the Tigers into multiple turnovers, tying the game 60-60 after Hernandez made his sixth three of the contest with 11 minutes to play. The Running Eagles took their first lead of the half 68-66 after
Cam Horton hit a reverse layup on the fast break off a Hernandez steal with 8:08 to play. The Tigers retook the lead, but Hernandez's final three ball of the contest with 1:51 to play, gave Life U an advantage they would not relinquish. With Georgetown needing points, the Running Eagles defense continued locking the Tigers down, while Horton and Hernandez were clutch from the free throw line to see Life U win 81-77.
Barnes and Hernandez combined to provide the majority of offensive production for the Running Eagles the pair posting game-high 26 points each. Barnes' points were supported by an 11-for-12 mark from the charity stripe while collecting seven boards. Hernandez was a sharp shooter from range, hitting on 7-for-13 from deep to go with six boards and four assists.
Life U held a slight edge in shooting from deep at 43.5%-37.1% and a large advantage in shooting from the charity stripe 91.3%-60%, but the Tigers held a slight edge in shooting overall 47.5%-47.2%. The Running Eagles outrebounded Georgetown 35-29.
The men's basketball team stays home for their next contest, facing Carver College Monday at 7 PM before ending the regular season on the road for a pair of late week Mid-South Conference games.
