Last Second Goal Sends Life U to 14-13 Loss Against No. 6 Benedictine

MARIETTA, Ga. --- Maria Arvizu matched her career high with seven goals, but a last second goal by visiting, No. 6 Benedictine College saw the No. 4 Life University women's lacrosse team take a 14-13 loss on a chilly, rainy Tuesday night at Lupo Family Field.

The first quarter was a defensive battle, neither team finding much space for their offenses as the teams combined for three quick goals in the first three minutes of the contest but not finding another score in the period. Life U trailed 2-1 after 15 minutes. The Running Eagles put together a strong second quarter, the team's trading goals to start the second, before Life U ran off five unanswered--Arvizu scoring three times--to take a 7-3 lead with two minutes to play in the half. The Ravens found a score before the half ended to see the teams enter the break, Life U leading 7-4.

The second half went against the Running Eagles, the team's trading scores to start the third before Benedictine ran off five unanswered to take a 10-8 lead into the final period of play. The final 15 was a back-and-forth affair, after the team's again traded goals early, Arvizu recorded back-to-back goals to tie the game at 11 with just over nine minutes to play. Down a score with just two minutes to play, Arvizu scored and then assisted an Angie Forbes score to see Life U take its first second half lead 13-12. The Ravens scored twice in the final 17 seconds to take the win 14-13.

Despite the loss, Arvizu had an unbelievable game, scoring a career-high matching seven goals, assisting two others, grabbing eight ground balls, and causing five turnovers. Forbes was the only other player to collect multiple goals, scoring three times while picking up two ground balls and a cause turnover. Leanne Windon had a great game defensively, causing five turnovers and earning six ground balls.

As to be expected for a last second game, there was a high degree of parity in the stats between the teams, Life U holding a slight 26-24 edge in shots, a 30-25 advantage in ground balls, and 21-15 lead in caused turnovers. Benedictine had less turnovers at 26-27 and also stopped a couple more shots with nine saves to Life U's seven.

The Running Eagles stay home through the rest of the week, facing No. 7 Sienna Heights Friday at 4 PM.
