DENMARK, SC. — The Life University women's basketball team held on for a win against Vorhees College Saturday afternoon, narrowly maintaining as lead down the stretch to win by four, 53-49.
The Running Eagles (12-8, 4-6 SSAC) were led in scoring by junior guard Tanit Calsapeu, who scored 12, while transfer senior Fapou Semebene picked up a double-double with 11 points and 13 boards.
Despite the narrow victory, the Running Eagles maintained the lead for most of the contest, as the matchup only had two lead changes and two ties.
From the jump, the Tigers from Vorhees College shot ahead to gain their largest lead of the contest 13-8, but shortly after, the Running Eagles cut the lead down to three by the end of the quarter, 15-12. The Running Eagles then took a 16-15 advantage shortly into the second quarter and never looked back, carrying a 26-19 lead into halftime.
The four-point second quarter for Vorhees provided Life University with a large cushion in the second half as the Running Eagles claimed their largest lead of the contest (13) at the 8:30 mark of 3rd quarter.
After leading by as many as twelve in the fourth, the hosts fought back to make it a one-point ballgame with three minutes to play. Kierra York then closed out the contest for Life U., finishing a layup before splitting a pair of free throws to push the lead back to a two-possession game.
Solid defense in the final possessions of the game forced misses including a final 3-point miss from the Tigers. After the miss, the Running Eagles dribbled out the remainder of the clock to move to 12-8 on the season, concluding the team's non-conference slate of games.
Ten Running Eagles played in the game, eight of which scored.
