WALESKA, Ga. --- The Life University women's lacrosse team hit the road tonight, coming out on top in a battle against in-state rival and third-ranked Reinhardt University, 14-10 to stay perfect on the season.
Life U (4-0) came out on top on the road at Reinhardt (1-3) in large part due to
Maria Arvizu and
Lacy Legaspi having insane games. The pair of seniors provided nearly all of the scoring on the night as they each recorded six goals. Besides her scoring, Arvizu also added three assists, seven ground balls, and a caused turnover. The team stats were rather evenly split between the teams, both squads recording 25 shots, while Life U led caused turnovers narrowly 13-12. The biggest determining factor for the Running Eagles were saves,
Ashley Hammel helping to give the team a 12-7 edge.
An early card by Reinhardt helped set Life U up with its first score of the day, Legaspi netting a free position shot. The Eagles post back-to-back scores to take a short lived lead, 2-1, Arvizu scoring her first goal of the game to see the teams go through the first period tied 2-2. The second period saw the teams continue their dog fight, trading scores back and forth. A pair of quick goals by Arvizu in the final five minutes of the half gave the team a 5-4 lead, but Reinhardt answered to see things tied going into the break 5-5.
The third period made the game for Life U, the Running Eagles running off six scores during the period. The tie lasted until the five minute mark of the third, an Arvizu score off a free position sparking a run for Life U. Three more goals over the rest of the third, including
Lexi Santiago's first of the day saw the Running Eagles enter the final 15 minutes with an 11-8 edge. Another Santiago score in the first minute of the fourth extended the lead to 12-8. Life U's defense shut down any efforts for Reinhardt to get back into the game, helping the Running Eagles secure a 14-10 victory.
The Running Eagles come back to Lupo Family Field for a three game home stead next, starting the run with a game against No. 2 Lawrence Tech March 8th at 6 PM.
