Running Eagles Drop Season Opener to RV Georgia Gwinnett

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Life University women's soccer team fell 1-0 in its season opener on a hot Thursday evening in Lawrenceville.

The first half was a defensive battle, where Georgia Gwinnett delivered the first goal of the game in the 5' minute but saw Life U control possession for much of the rest of the first half.  Additionally, the Running Eagles held a 3-0 corner kick advantage for the half.

The Running Eagles were able to deliver four shots in the first half which led to the first goal of the season by Jeanne Brigand in the 36', who unleashed a rocket that whistled past the outstretched arms of GGC's goalkeeper Johansson. 

Goalkeeper Lisset Fernanda Ruiz-Franco made two saves in the first half to keep Life U in the match.

In the second half, the Running Eagles surrendered an early goal in the 47', giving GGC the lead 2-1. 

From there, Life U began to regain control of possession with four corners and two shots, but Georgia Gwinnett was able to take a few bolts and kept the Running Eagles down 2-1 the rest of the second half.

Freshman Marey Helgadottir led Life U with two shot attempts for the contest. 

Up next, the Running Eagles will host Montreat College (N.C) on Saturday, September 2. Kickoff against the Cavaliers is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.  

TURNING POINT:

- Georgia Gwinnett's 59' goal was enough to stand up as the Running Eagles were unable to level the contest.

STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:

- Life U's goalkeeper Lisset Fernanda Ruiz-Franco faced five shots on goal, making three saves to hold the Grizzlies to two goals.
