MARIETTA, Ga. - The Life University men's soccer team fell to UT Southern in the SSAC quarterfinals in penalty kicks, 6-7.
The Running Eagles acted quickly with Manuel Carrillo adding a goal early in the 1st minute to take the lead early. The Firehawks would react with adding a goal of their own in the 5th minute.Â
Life U's Timon Kuiper was not going to let UTS lead for too long by putting the ball in the back of the net to take the lead 2-1.Â
Before going into the break the Firehawks would add another goal to bring it to a tie in the first 45 minutes.Â
Out of half, both teams fought hard but UT Southern was able to break the scoring field in the 63rd minute. UTS was sure they had secured the win but Life U would add a goal in the 88th minute from Finn Seijsener to push the game into overtime.Â
Life U led in overtime opportunities 5-3 but the game remained 0-0 after 110 minutes of play and penalties would be required to find a winner.Â
Kuiper was the first to shoot for the Running Eagle, adding a successful goal past the Firehawks goalie. UT Southern followed by being able to add a goal of their own.
Devin Koorn would follow with a goal, while UT Southern would tally one too.Â
With a 2-2 tie, Tommaso Silanos would add another one for Life U, while UT Southern again followed with their own.Â
This time Jonas Clein was put to the test being able to put one in the back of the net and the Firehawks were also able to add one to leave both teams on their toes.Â
Sem Van Der Leer stepped up to the line, being able to secure a goal for Life U which then followed another UTS goal.
Carlos Flores would take his turn, but this time UT Southern's goalie was able to make the same which then led to another Firehawks goal which would allow them to advance to the next round of the SSAC Championship Tournament.
"Unfortunately, not the result we wanted. PK's are always a lottery but truth be told we had plenty of chances in regulation and in overtime to take the win and advance," Head Coach
Alex Pama stated. "Our youthfulness got us again into a difficult match with conceding again on set pieces. Not only do we have to defend those better, we also need to become smarter in not giving our opponent those set pieces as much. Now we wait and see what the selection committee decides. We've had a good season so far with a 10-4-3 record but like many teams, we don't know if that is enough to be awarded an at-large bid into the National Tournament."
