SPARTANBURG, S.C. — The Life University's men's basketball team bested Spartanburg Methodist late Monday night in an offensive shootout. The contest against the Pioneers was originally scheduled for the previous Wednesday but was moved to Monday due to weather. For the second straight game, junior Chaze Harris dropped 30+ points, going 9-13 from the floor while adding six rebounds and four assists.
Both offenses came to play in the first half, with just three points separating the teams at the first media timeout. However, the Running Eagles defense found an answer to the Spartanburg Methodist offense, holding the Pioneers to just seven points in the final six minutes of the half. The offense continued to knock down buckets as Life U closed the half on a 25-7 run, taking a 17 point lead into the break.
Senior Tyreke Johnson led all scorers in the first half with 25 while shooting an impressive 8-8 from three point range.
Out of the half, Life U stretched the lead to 21 as junior Cortez Johnson and Harris looked to bury the Pioneers late. Spartanburg Methodist refused to go quietly, posting a 21-6 run of their own to cut the lead to just five with just 5:38 left in the game. Though the Pioneers would work the lead down to just four in the final minutes of play, Life U would outlast the late push to secure the 99-93.
The 99 points from the Running Eagles offense is just one short from matching the season-high 100 points scored against the Pioneers earlier this season.
Life U improves to 16-4 with the win over Spartanburg Methodist. Up next, the Running Eagles travel to William Carey for an SSAC contest on Thursday, January 30.
