PHILADELPHIA, Pa. — The Life University women's rugby team powered through a grueling 14-hour trip to earn a commanding 71–3 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. Despite the travel fatigue and cool 60-degree weather, the Running Eagles showcased their depth and determination, tallying 11 tries in a complete team performance.
Life U got on the board early as forward Cora Haughey powered over for the opening try in the 8th minute, converted by Angelina Mason for a 7–0 lead. Azhinaye Barner, Bella Vogel, and Alle English each added tries in the next 15 minutes, with Mason staying perfect from the tee to make it 24–0. Nevaeh Elliott and Hattie Greenwood capped the first half with back-to-back scores, sending the Running Eagles into the break up 36–0.
Life U continued to roll after halftime, with Vogel and Elliott each notching their second tries to extend the lead to 50–0. Philadelphia broke through with a penalty kick in the 57th minute, but the Running Eagles closed strong behind two tries from debutant Olivia Frisby and another from Barner. Mason was flawless on the day, going a perfect 8-for-8 on conversions to seal the 71–3 final.
The Running Eagles controlled the match with 58% possession and 63% territory, winning 8 of 9 scrums and 10 of 12 lineouts while forcing 11 turnovers. Defensively, Life U stayed sharp despite 13 penalties, highlighted by Megan Chang's thunderous tackle at inside center early in the match.
"The scoreline flattered us. This wasn't a pretty game, but 11 tries show this team's ability. Brutal travel challenges made it scrappy, and we struggled with ball retention—27 entries into their 22 with only 11 conversions is an area we'll improve. There were face-in-hand moments, but we were effective when it mattered," said Head Coach Ryszard Chadwick.
Standout efforts included Frisby's two-try debut, Mason's perfect 8-for-8 kicking display, and multi-try performances from Vogel and Elliott. Barner also impressed with her physicality and consistent carries.
