ATHENS, TN. - The Life University women's basketball team was on the road this weekend at Tennessee Wesleyan University in their first road game of the season and soared past the Bulldogs 76-72 on Saturday afternoon.
Life University used a very strong defensive stalemate in the first quarter to lead the Bulldogs 18-12 at the end of the period. The Running Eagles forced the Bulldogs to turn the ball over six times in the period, which led to 13 points off turnovers for the Running Eagles. In the second period, the Running Eagles defense kept their foot on the gas holding the Bulldogs to shooting 34.5% from the field and out-rebounding them 25-7 in the first half. The Running Eagles also used a 24-pt quarter to pull away from the Bulldogs to lead 42-29 at the half.
After the half, Tennessee Wesleyan began to surge, cutting the Running Eagles 13-pt halftime lead all the way down to a single possession (70-68) with 1:34 left in the fourth quarter. Junior guard Tyasia Williams made a layup with 41 seconds left to give the Running Eagles a four-point lead, before senior Madison Carey sunk four clutch free throws over the course of the final 20 seconds to give the Running Eagles the close victory on the road.
Overall, six different Running Eagles scored in the match up versus the Bulldogs, with only four scoring in double figures. The team was led by Tyasia Williams with 24 points and sophomore Aniyah Offutt with 18 points. Senior Kenya Robinson also made her presence known in the box score posting 14 points to go along with a season-high 16 rebounds.
Up next, the Running Eagles will be back in the Eagles' Nest against Xavier University of Louisiana on November 14th at 6 pm.
