MARIETTA, Ga. — The Life University men's basketball team blew past the Tigers of Voorhees on Thursday night behind a hot shooting night. The Running Eagles shot 59.7% from the floor while also shooting 50% from beyond the arc.
A hot start in the Eagles' Nest saw the Running Eagles jump out to a 13-5 lead within the first three minutes of the contest. Calvin Payton could not miss from beyond the arc, starting the contest 4-4 while Brashon Hall and Maurice Wright also connected on early buckets.Â
Though the visiting Tigers shot the ball well to stay in the contest, Life U grabbed the first double-digit lead of the game midway through the first following a fast-break layup from Payton. Voorehees did its best to stay in the contest, slicing the lead down to six with just under four to play. However, the Running Eagles closed out the first half on a 14-2 run, taking an 18-point lead into the break. Payton had a monster first half, dropping 17 points on 6-9 shooting. Matija Gledic also had a great first, scoring 13 points.
Half time did little to slow down Life U. A quick bucket from Shane Stevensen pushed the lead to 20 directly out of the break as the Tigers had no answer for the lights out shooting. Buckets continued to pour in during the second half as 12 different Running Eagles contributed to the scoring. Late free throws from Sergio Corta gave Life U its largest lead at 32 with 04:02 left to go.
Dominant from start to finish, the Running Eagles narrowly missed scoring triple-digits, closing out the contest with a 99-70 win. Payton led all scorers in the contest with 23 while three other Running Eagles scored in the double-digits.
