Women's Rugby Falls Short in D1A Title Clash Against Lindenwood

04.20.25

STANFORD, Calif. — The Life University women's rugby team came up just short in a hard-fought battle against Lindenwood University, falling 19-15 in the D1A National Championship on Saturday.

The Running Eagles struck first, with Harlie Kallichuk touching down a try just over five minutes into the match following a strong offensive start. Despite the early lead, both teams struggled to maintain momentum in the face of blustery conditions, spending much of the first half trading possession in midfield.

Lindenwood responded in the 13th minute, breaking through after a sustained attack near the try line. A successful conversion gave the Lions a 7-5 lead — an advantage that held through halftime, as both sides failed to capitalize on additional opportunities.

Life came out of the break with renewed energy, fending off an early Lindenwood push before regaining offensive rhythm. Kallichuk again found space on the wing, finishing a multi-phase sequence to put the Running Eagles back in front.

But Lindenwood answered quickly. A powerful run from their MA Sorensen Award nominee set up the Lions' second try, and another conversion swung the lead back in their favor, 14-10. Life responded with urgency, and Azhinaye Barner broke through for the team's third try of the match, giving the Running Eagles a narrow advantage, 15-14.

The lead, however, would not hold. With just over ten minutes remaining, Lindenwood scored the decisive try and conversion, making it 19-15. Life University pressed in the final minutes, controlling possession and applying pressure deep in opposition territory, but Lindenwood's defense stood firm to secure the win.

The loss marks the end of the 15s season. The Running Eagles' valiant effort came up just short in the thrilling national title showdown. The program now turns their attention towards the 7s season.
