KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Life University men's volleyball team opened postseason play in impressive fashion Thursday afternoon, sweeping Truett McConnell in straight sets, 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-23), in the quarterfinal round of the AAC Tournament.
The Running Eagles (15-10, 9-5 AAC) were tested throughout the match but consistently rose to the moment, using efficient offense and timely execution to hold off late pushes and secure the sweep. Despite the straight-set result, each frame presented its own challenges, particularly in the opening and closing sets where Truett McConnell battled point-for-point.
Life U set the tone early in a tightly contested first set that featured multiple ties and momentum swings. With the score knotted late, the Running Eagles capitalized on key errors and executed down the stretch to pull away for a 25-22 victory. The second set saw Life settle into a rhythm offensively, putting together one of its most efficient stretches of the match. Behind strong distribution and a balanced attack, the Running Eagles created separation midway through the frame and maintained control en route to a 25-21 win and a 2-0 match lead.
The third set proved to be the most competitive of the afternoon, as Truett McConnell refused to go away quietly. The teams traded points throughout, combining for numerous ties and lead changes. However, Life once again delivered in the clutch, scoring key points late to close out the set 25-23 and complete the sweep.
Offensively, the Running Eagles were sharp, finishing with 49 kills on a .366 hitting percentage. Serano Keijl led the attack with 15 kills, providing a steady presence on the outside. Jan Burhardt was highly efficient, recording 10 kills on a .600 hitting percentage, while Jakub Kantorowicz added 10 kills and a service ace. Vincent Eisinga contributed seven kills and two blocks, further highlighting Life's balanced offensive effort.
Setter Riley Chapman orchestrated the offense with precision, dishing out 41 assists while also contributing a service ace. Defensively, Nazmi Bayoglu anchored the back row with a team-high eight digs, helping the Running Eagles manage Truett McConnell's offensive pressure.
At the net, Life totaled 6.0 team blocks, with Charles Ewer leading the way with four total blocks and Burhardt adding three. The Running Eagles also applied pressure from the service line, recording four aces as a team.
Truett McConnell posted a solid offensive performance, hitting .280 as a team. Alex Bosman led all players with 14 kills, while Eduardo Andrade added 10 kills on an efficient .429 clip. Despite their efforts, Life's consistency and ability to execute in key moments proved to be the difference.
With the win, the Running Eagles advance to the AAC Tournament semifinals and will face Reinhardt on Friday at 4:30 p.m. as they continue their postseason run.
