AVE MARIA, Fla. – Juniors
Katelynn Harbeke and
Josie Davis led Life University (2-1-0) to a 6-3 rout of Ave Maria University on Saturday. The six goals scored in the match were the most in a single game in school history.
Â
Head Coach
Sam Clark was pleased with the performance of her squad in the victory.
Â
"This was an important win for the team, especially coming off the result from our last game," Clark said. "To be able to mentally rebound from a game like that shows a lot about the character of this team. We adjusted a few things, worked some things out and the team executed the game plan well. The conditions were difficult, but the team worked through it and ultimately showed a great desire to get the result they needed today."
Â
In a game marked by its sloppy conditions due to a torrential downpour, Harbeke became just the second player in school history to log a hat trick in a game. The other is Davis, who posted two goals of her own in the win. Freshman
Julia Bernhardt earned her second win of the season only allowing three goals with 11 saves on 14 shots on goal.
Â
The Running Eagles got things started early with Davis finding the back of the net at 9'. Harbeke would score a short while later, with her first goal coming at 17'. Ave Maria would get on the board with a goal at 22'. The remainder of the half devolved into a defensive stalemate, with Life U leading 2-1 at the half.
Â
The final period began much the way the previous on did, as Life U scored early with Harbeke scoring her second goal at 49'. Shortly thereafter, they did it again as freshman
Annaleise Wittenmyer found the back of the net at 58'. AMU scored two quick goals at 64' and 66' to cut the lead to one. However, Davis and Harbeke would answer back in rapid succession with goals at 68' and 69', respectively.
Â
The Running Eagles are back in action on Monday, Aug. 28 as they travel to North Miami, Fla. to face off against Johnson & Wales.
